Walmart Asks Cosmetic Suppliers to Consider Sourcing Away from China

Walmart (WMT) has asked its cosmetics suppliers to consider sourcing their goods in countries outside of China, a sign the company is trying to dilute the impact of U.S.’ looming tariffs on Chinese goods, according to Bloomberg.

A “large amount” of items in the cosmetics category fall under the most-recent proposed levies on Chinese goods, according to an Aug. 7 email sent from Walmart’s procurement division to some of its cosmetics suppliers, the story noted. The email reportedly asked suppliers if they have facilities outside of China, and if not, whether they would consider investing in some to broaden their sourcing ability.

Separately, Walmart has applied for two patents that detail a “virtual show room” and fulfillment system that would connect shoppers clad in VR headsets and sensor-packed gloves to a three-dimensional representation of a Walmart store, Bloomberg reported. Customers could wander digital aisles from home and “grab” items, which would be immediately picked and shipped from a fully automated distribution center, it said.
